“On my last holiday I went to...
The Costa De La Luz (the coast of light) in Southern Spain. We have a young family and this particular area is great for what we wanted – a friendly atmosphere, long and clean sandy beaches, local and international places to eat and guaranteed warm weather. This part of Spain remains unspoiled and don’t tell anyone, but we would certainly recommend it to people with children under three years in age!
My all time favourite holiday destination is...
Actually I have two favourites for different reasons. The first is the Brazilian city of Rio de Janerio and the second is Thailand. Rio is like no other city I have ever visited. It’s vibrant, friendly and very exciting. The city and surrounding area is very dramatic and in my mind the view from Sugar Loaf Mountain is certainly one of the best. Thailand by contrast is one of the best places on earth just to chill and relax. We were very lucky to spend almost three weeks in a place called Krabi, which is beautiful and includes within the surrounding area Phang Nga Bay, which is famous for being the hideout in the James Bond film, the Man with the Golden Gun – a place I have always wanted to go!
My short breaks are spent...
Either at home with the family or somewhere within the UK (recent breaks include the Dorset or North Norfolk coast) dreaming of city breaks in Europe, which is how we would spend short breaks before having the kids.I think one of the best cities I have visited was Antwerp – I remember our flight landing late morning which gave us enough time to get to the hotel, check in / dump our luggage and find a great bar for a lunch of mussels and cold beer.
My dream holiday destination anywhere in the world is...
An African safari.Only in the last couple of years has this appealed to me.Bethan (my wife) has been to Africa on safari a couple of times and is convinced I would love it but I have never been so sure.I was always put off by how hot I think it might be or how buggy I have heard it is but this was me being small minded; I think now I would find it all very exciting.Other than that it would be a long haul city break to somewhere I have never been.... Perhaps LA or Kuala Lumpur
On my next holiday I am planning to go to...
We have only just come back from Spain so at the moment there is nothing planned for a holiday as such but we are taking the girls to London for a couple of nights in the near future. We live in Norfolk so we will catch a train down to Liverpool Street (all part of the experience) and no doubt visit the new Gorilla compound at London Zoo, walk the South Bank (several times) and see the sharks at the Aquarium! If I was to plan an actual holiday at this point in time, I would quite fancy taking the family back to Spain – it was just wonderful.
Destination Feature - Antigua

Antigua offers year round sun and an astounding 365 beaches – one for every day of the year. Located in the heart of the Caribbean, the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda provide the ultimate getaway experience with its perfect climate, azure-blue waters, colonial-era historic sites and world-renowned events.
Antigua and Barbuda also offers a plethora of sporting activities including golf, tennis, squash, riding, cycling and every conceivable water-sport. To make full use of the crystalline waters, try windsurfing and kitesurfing in this world- renowned destination. Also, don’t miss the excellent sailing, snorkelling and scuba- diving with numerous dive sites around Antigua offering the opportunity to explore the underwater world.
Why not charter a deep sea fishing boat as the warm waters are teeming with fish such as marlin, tuna and barracuda? For a great family day-out try Stingray City which offers the exciting chance to swim with these wonderful creatures. Those who prefer things a little more relaxed on holiday can enjoy a pampering and rejuvenating treatment in one of the many excellent spas across the islands.
Even the briefest of visits to Antigua reveals how rich the island is in both culture and history with so many sightseeing opportunities. St Johns, the capital, offers harbour-front shopping in Heritage Quay, and in the more rustic Redcliffe Quay - shops, restaurants and galleries inhabit restored stone and wooden buildings. English Harbour, home to Nelson's Dockyard with its collection of original buildings, forts and museum, is Antigua’s most popular visitor attraction. Must-see’s include Admiral’s House and The Copper and Lumber Store, which provided copper sheathing for the hulls of wooden ships. The ideal way to get a sense of Antigua’s geography is by taking a helicopter tour over the island. From the air, visitors will not fail to be impressed by the picturesque landscape of coves, bays and undulating hills.
Other sights in Antigua include Devil’s Bridge and Shirley Heights. The traditional, weekly ‘jump-up’ at Shirley Heights with BBQ and live, steel bands has made it the place to be on a Sunday night. Antigua’s sister island Barbuda, just 27 miles away, is a flat coral island with an area of just 62 square miles. Barbuda’s unique, unspoilt pink sand beaches are a beautiful sight and the Frigate bird sanctuary is perfect for nature lovers. The island is just a 90-minute ferry or catamaran ride away from Antigua making it an excellent day trip.
Why not time your stay with an event? To start the party and likely to attract a diverse crowd, is the annual Antiguan ‘Back II Life’ Fun in the Sun music festival (April). Enjoy the unique sounds of some of the UK's most influential DJs against the stunning backdrop of the island. Don’t miss the vibrant colours of the annual Carnival (July/August) celebrations: the splendour of the costumes, the glamour, and the passionate performances of the calypsonians and Soca artists, which reflect the true heart of the Caribbean, found in Antigua.
During carnival calypso music, steel bands, masquerades, floats and street 'jump-ups' fill the island and there are endless opportunities for dancing into the early hours. Barbuda also hosts its own ‘Caribana’ carnival. Antigua Sailing Week is a maritime Mardi Gras which sees spectators and seafarers alike revel in glorious racing. The preceding Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, is an equally special occasion, with more than 50 of the world's finest classic yachts, schooners and gaffers taking to the seas (April/May).
Saltfish Balls, Okra Fungee and Antigua Pepperpot are just some of the tantalizing and traditional Antiguan dishes visitors can indulge in during a stay on the twin-island nation. And with every type of restaurant on offer from award- winning gourmet to fun beach bars, every pocket and taste is catered for.
There are few more romantic places to renew your wedding vows, say ‘I do’, or take your honeymoon than the exotic, dream islands of Antigua and Barbuda. With so many delightful locations to choose from; flower-bedecked gazebos, perfect white sand beaches or the romantic ruins of Shirley Heights, you can be sure that wherever you choose to marry it will be the most memorable day of your life.
Spend evenings dining alfresco on the finest seafood, dancing to romantic Caribbean rhythms under the stars or walking barefoot across the stunning beach to your luxurious room. You’ll find that your wedding or honeymoon in Antigua and Barbuda will be everything you ever dreamed of and more.
